Chiaki Watanabe - New Live Visual Music Performances - Europe

Chiaki Watanabe is performing new live audio visual performances and installations in May, June 2010 at several visual music and audio visual events in Copenhagan, Denmark and Karlsruhe and Berlin, Germany.

"Chiaki Watanabe is a visual artist/designer based in Copenhagen, and New York. She creates abstract visual music works in various forms: video, live video performance and installation. Her work explores cross-sensory experience in a minimalist framework by integrating sound and visual imagery. Known for “hardcore-abstract” visuals. Her interest lies in visual phenomena within music and music within visual phenomena – visual music in physical space - psychophysical effects of visual music - how visual music stimulates the senses."(US/JP/DK)

Shane McKenna - Moving Lights in D

Shane McKenna is a composer and video artist based in Ireland, who creates the most intricate muscial visual music pieces.  He expolores the use of animated graphic notation to create musical collaboration.
His latest piece - Moving Lights in D is a wonderful example of his approach.  It can be viewed on Vimeo and is embedded in this post

Moving Lights in D from Shane Mc Kenna on Vimeo.

Information about Moving Lights in D
"To experiment with processed video footage as an animated score I performed this short piece myself in twenty separate takes on both classical guitar and electric bass. Each track was recorded listening to playback from the previous track only to allow some interaction between parts but a free feeling overall. I stayed within the key of Dmaj to tie the layers together while following the visual rhythms gave a sense of pulse at certain points. Playing along with D maj or B min scales will sound tasty if you have an instrument handy or just follow the visuals with any notes or sounds, why not?"

Jean Detheux - Festival du Nouveau Cinéma - 2009

Audio Visual Performance

A Visual and Sonic interplay by the painter- filmmaker Jean Detheux and pianist Jean-Philippe Collard-Neven

See
http://www.nouveaucinema.ca/2009/en/programmation/festival/?search=ok&lab=cinewild

Programme note:
"Normally, when you present a piece, you specify your intentions. But in this case, it is the absence of intention that defines our performance. We are not hoping for anything in particular to take place since it is precisely the “whatever happens” that interests us—all the more so if it is beyond our will or our control. We can say that the performance will be comprised of certain elements. There will be music, both early (Frescobaldi, Dowland, Couperin) and contemporary (Jean-Luc Fafchamps, John Adams, Steve Reich, Maurice Ravel, Claude Ledoux, Collard-Neven). There will also be free improvisation, music that doesn’t yet exist but lives only in the realm of possibility. At the same time, there will be images, drawn and reworked, as well as photos that don’t tell a story, a sort of abstract impressionism. Lastly, there will be a painterfilmmaker and a pianist who (re)discovered each other and (re)connnected somewhere beyond time and space and who very much look forward to the unexpected possibilities of their visual and sonic interplay."

biot(h)ing - Invisibles - Alisa Andrasek

I have just come across this most interesting installation research project to be shortly exhibited in paris. There is a lot of imagery that uses software generative processes to create "scripted" imagery - these images are always incredibly beautiful, and ordered displaying the most wonderful 'ordered' patterns that would be very hard to realise/create by hand processes. When these patterns are tied up to audio processes, then the most incredible synergy seems to take place. This project is a very physical realisation of both scripted animation and an interactive sonar field. What caught my eye was the imagery and the tight connection with sound. (Author comment)

"biot(h)ing - Invisibles is an interactive installation exhibited at the Prague Biennale and is to be exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2009. ‘Invisibles' by biot(h)ing uses holosonic speakers to create sound patterns projected into an interactive space. These speakers isolate individual cones of sound, creating a counterintuitive experience for the visitors as they move through different vibrations of sonar projections. At the same time LCD Screens display streams of information as it crystallizes and becomes visible through pulses of dynamic morphologies of 3D Cells scripted in animation software. These crystallized streams may also be affected by the physical environment through an interactive sonar field. At the core of this audio/visual/physical interface is an interactie sound programming environment that alters conventional forms of musical composition through the incorporation of algorithmically based processes. The user navigates the software's internal intelligence less like a composer and more like a programmer, adjusting various parameters to indirectly influence the system's internal network dynamics. The granular synthesis of sound results form the generation of thousands of short sonic grains which are combined linearly to form large-scale audio events."

"biothing is a research-design laboratory whose structure derives from particular linkages between various disciplinary and technological nodes, promoting intra-specific creative relationships which in turn serve as a transformative tissue for the design process itself..."

Nancy Herman - Visual Music

Nancy creates visual music works in both BlissPaint and Flash as the artist says, she creates "work that actually could be 'played' in real time if the colors were attached to keys on a musical key board."
Her desire is to create an instrument that could play color in time. The key issue for Nancy is to "'tune' the color through several spectra creating a smooth transition from light to dark. I think the color itself will create the 'music' over time- note the shapes of the color, or the way the color moves". Source: Artist website - www.nancyherman.com

Nancy has created several of these color in time works and they are available to preview on her website at:
http://visualmusic.nancyherman.com/

I have been aware of Nancy's work for long time and meant to blog about this ages ago. Very consistent and accurate color in time works, worth checking out.

Ryoichi Kurokawa - Japan - audiovisual artist

"Ryoichi Kurokawa is a japanese audiovisual artist. His works take on multiple forms such as screening works, recordings, installation and live performance. Kurokawa composes time based sculpture with digital generated materials and field recorded sources, and the minimal and the complexities coexist there. Kurokawa accepts sound and imagery as a unit not as separately, and constructs very exquisite and precise computer based works with the audiovisual language. That shortens mutual distance, the reciprocity and the synchronization of sound and visual composition. He also performed live-visual for musicians such as HUMAN AUDIO SPONGE(ex.YMO: Sketch Show + Ryuichi Sakamoto). In recent years, Kurokawa is invited to numerous noted international festivals and museums in Europe, US and Asia including TATE MODERN[UK], ARS ELECTRONICA[AT], transmediale[DE], Shanghai eARTS[CN], MUTEK[CA], TodaysArt[NL] and SONAR[ES] for exhibition, screening or audiovisual concert, and he continues to be an active presence on the international stage."

COMPOSER - Jim Aitchison - Visible Music

Visible Music
Composing visions of sound by UK composer Jim Aitchison.

"Jim Aitchison is a composer whose music derives from a range of sources, often from the world of the visual, re-imagining contemporary and past artworks as notations of sound. He makes music for chamber ensembles, orchestra and solo performers out of encounters with visual art and living artists, curators and galleries. The work is proposed both as a response to these encounters and as part of a wider engagement with fundamental musical and artistic issues."

His responses to art/paintings in a musical context are quite extraordinary. The scores resemble the visual - as in the screenshot when you come to his website initially, here a painting entitled Elegy for Terry Frost by John Hyland is scored in the most incredible manner. It is worth taking ones time to go through his website (my comment).

"Jim Aitchison is a composer and a Henry Moore Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music and Birkbeck College, University of London. He is recognised for a particular vision linking visual art with compositional practice. He composes what curator Paul Moorhouse describes as 'conversations between art-forms,' working directly with leading figures from the worlds of art and music."
